Terms of Use

These Terms of Use (the “Terms”) govern the use of the puntacanarentacar.com website, our reservation system (including My Bookings) and our WhatsApp assistant. They form part of the contract between you and PUNTA CANA RENT A CAR S.R.L. (“Punta Cana Rent a Car”, “we”, “us”). By making a reservation you accept these Terms, our Refund Policy, our Rental Insurance Policy and the Rental Agreement you will sign at pick-up. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your personal data.

1. Reservations and confirmation

  • A reservation is created when you complete the booking process. A reservation paid online is confirmed once the payment is completed; until then it is saved for you but not guaranteed. A reservation set to pay at pick-up is confirmed when it is created.
  • Unpaid reservations are held for you but are not guaranteed and may be released or cancelled if the vehicle is needed for a confirmed booking.
  • All reservations are subject to vehicle availability and to verification of the information you provide. Online payments may be subject to anti-fraud checks, which can delay or suspend a reservation.
  • Prices are shown in US dollars; the 18% ITBIS tax is added as shown at checkout.
  • The image and model shown are indicative of the vehicle category. The exact model delivered depends on availability within the confirmed category (“or similar”).

2. Requirements at pick-up

The main renter must present a valid driver’s license issued in their country of residence (valid for the whole rental period and clearly legible), a valid ID or passport, and the means of payment for the security deposit described in Section 5. If you booked through a hotel, Airbnb or another address, we will coordinate the meeting point with you by WhatsApp or phone.

3. Drivers and age

  • The main renter and every additional driver must be at least 18 years old and not older than 65. Drivers over 65 may be accepted at our discretion, after our evaluation.
  • Drivers under 25 may be charged a daily young-driver fee, which we will confirm before the rental.
  • Additional drivers are free of charge. They must be present at pick-up, meet the same requirements as the main renter, show a valid driver’s license and sign the Rental Agreement.
  • We may refuse to rent or deliver a vehicle if the renter does not meet these requirements or does not appear able to drive safely.

4. Rental period, rates and extensions

  • Rates are per 24-hour rental day, counted from the pick-up time. The minimum rental charge is equivalent to 3 days.
  • If you return the vehicle after the agreed return date and time, we may charge an additional rental day for the late return, and a further day for each additional 24 hours.
  • You can extend your rental from My Bookings or by contacting us before the agreed return time, subject to vehicle availability. Extensions are priced at the rate that applies when you request them.
  • You can change the vehicle category at pick-up by paying the additional daily rate, subject to availability.
  • If the rental conditions are not respected, including restrictions on where the vehicle may be driven, fines or surcharges may apply.

5. Security deposit

A security deposit is required at pick-up, by credit card (preferred), debit card in the renter’s name, or cash. It is a hold or deposit, not a charge: it secures the vehicle against damage, late return, extra days used, missing fuel, fines and cleaning, among the items detailed in the Rental Insurance Policy. The standard amounts by vehicle category are:

  • Economy cars, sedans and minivans: USD 100
  • Compact SUVs: USD 150
  • Full-size SUVs: USD 200
  • Convertible Jeeps and 4x4 vehicles: USD 300
  • Sports convertibles: USD 500
  • Luxury and premium vehicles: as confirmed in your reservation

The exact amount for your vehicle appears in your reservation summary. We may require a higher deposit depending on the vehicle, the length of the rental, the payment method or other risk factors. The deposit, including any increase, is 100% refundable when the vehicle is returned with no charges due. It is released the same day the vehicle is returned; your bank may take 5 to 10 business days to show the funds as available.

6. Payments

Online payments are processed through PayPal. Your card or account details are entered on PayPal’s secure pages and we never see or store full card numbers. Alternatively, a reservation can be set to pay at pick-up, in which case you pay at the counter. You can also pay a pending reservation online at any time from My Bookings. Extras, extensions, fees, damages, fines and any other charges under the Rental Agreement are payable as stated in that agreement.

7. Fuel policy

With the Prepaid Fuel option, the vehicle is delivered with a full tank and may be returned at any fuel level; unused fuel is not reimbursed. Without Prepaid Fuel, the vehicle must be returned with the same fuel level it had when you received it. Otherwise a fuel charge applies, based on the estimated gallons needed to restore that level, at the per-gallon rate and refuelling service charge stated in the Rental Agreement.

8. Insurance

Every rental includes Basic Insurance: the third-party liability coverage required by Dominican law, plus our 10% share of the repair cost of damage to the vehicle (up to USD 350). Basic Insurance practically does not cover damage to the vehicle: you are responsible for the remaining 90%, plus loss of use and the administrative fee, unless you add an optional plan. Full terms, exclusions and your obligations after an accident are in the Rental Insurance Policy. If you choose optional protection, you will initial it in your Rental Agreement.

9. Use of the vehicle

The vehicle may only be driven by the authorized drivers named in the Rental Agreement, in compliance with Dominican law and the rental conditions. You are responsible for fines, tolls, impound and immobilisation costs incurred during the rental. Uses and situations that are never covered are listed in the Rental Insurance Policy.

10. Cancellation and changes by you

You can change or cancel your reservation from My Bookings or by contacting us. How refunds work is explained in our Refund Policy. If you do not collect the vehicle and do not contact us, we may treat the reservation as a no-show and release the vehicle.

11. Cancellation by Punta Cana Rent a Car

We reserve the right to cancel or terminate a reservation or rental, before or during the rental period, if the information provided is inaccurate or incomplete; if the renter does not meet the rental requirements (age, valid driver license, valid ID); if the vehicle is driven by anyone other than the authorized drivers listed in the contract; if the vehicle is driven under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or used in violation of the rental terms or Dominican law; if the vehicle becomes unavailable due to an accident, mechanical failure or force majeure; or in case of suspected fraud or payment irregularities. In such cases, the renter must return the vehicle immediately when requested. Any days paid and not used will be refunded, less any damages, fines, fees or charges incurred under the rental agreement.

12. Limitation of liability

Our liability for loss or damage arising from the rental is limited as set out in the Rental Insurance Policy and, in any case, to the extent permitted by Dominican law and without affecting your rights as a consumer.

13. Website, accounts and content

If you create an account and password, you are responsible for keeping them confidential. The content of this website (text, images, logos) belongs to Punta Cana Rent a Car or its licensors and may not be copied or reused without our written permission. Some services shown on the site may be provided by third parties and are then subject to their own terms.

14. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The version in force when you make a reservation applies to that reservation. The date of the latest update is shown at the top of this page.

15. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Dominican Republic, and any dispute will be submitted to the competent courts of the Dominican Republic.
